What we do
Optivation is an R&D company in the Danish maritime cluster that develops advanced optimization and data analytics software. Optivation was founded in 2007 and has 11 employees of which 6 hold a PhD in computer science.

Rune is Assoc. Prof. in computer science at the IT University of Copenhagen and holds a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University. He has headed 7 research projects on stowage planning optimization since 2006 primarily with the Maersk Group and has educated 4 PhDs and 2 PostDocs. Rune founded Optivation in 2007 and entered a strategic product collaboration with Interschalt (now Navis) in 2013.

Martin has an MSc in computer science from the IT University of Copenhagen, where he did a thesis on stowage plan reconfiguration using SAT-checking that later was published as a journal article. Martin has worked on R&D projects on cargomix with Maersk Line and is experienced in optimization algorithms as well as product development.

Nikolaos holds an MSc in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens and an MSc in Mathematical Modelling and Computation from the Technical University of Denmark. His thesis work was carried out in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Nikolaos has won distinctions for his work on bringing High-Performance Computing techniques into the marine engineering domain, along with presentations at international conferences.

Claus holds a Masters exam from Svendborg International Maritime Academy. He has been in the shipping industry since 1994, working both onboard vessels as duty officer, and ashore. Claus has worked 8 years in container stowage departments, in Denmark and Singapore for Maersk Line and Seago Line. Claus has held various positions in operation management and project management within liner shipping.

Berit holds a PhD in operations research from the Technical University of Denmark. The topic of her PhD is optimization of liner shipping networks conducted as a part of the ENERPLAN research project with Maersk Line. Berit has several publications in renowned international journals in the area of network design, cargo flow optimization, and disruption management.

Laurent has a PhD in computer science from the Technical University of Denmark. He has several publications within the area of project scheduling and energy optimization. Following his PhD, he has worked at IO Interactive and at Google. Laurent has worked closely with heuristic and exact solution methods for optimization, and has experience with developing backend systems that scale.

Joel holds a PhD in computer science from the IT University of Copenhagen, where he focused on streamlining phenological data acquisition processes through the use of computer vision, machine learning and data analysis. Before moving into academia Joel was in Red Hat, where he worked closely with the installer team focusing on general storage and graphical user interface aspects.

Agnieszka has an MSc in computer science from the IT University of Copenhagen. In her thesis she developed the first heuristic for the master planning phase of stowage planning optimization in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark. Agnieszka’s areas of expertise include metaheuristics and mathematical programming.

Mads has a PhD in computer science from the Department of Management Engineering of the Technical University of Denmark from 2011. He has published several recognized papers on vehicle routing and cargo-flow optimization in liner shipping. Before joining Optivation, Mads worked for two years as an IT consultant and developer at Kraftvaerk.

Kai is former Manager of Product Planning and Business Development at Bang & Olufsen. He has more than 10 years experience as Management Consultant at Sant + Bendix and PricewatehouseCoopers Consultants. He is co-founder and former Vice President of LEDlumina and LEDlumina Technology and is co-inventor of US8506120 B2.

Alberto holds a PhD in computer science from the IT University of Copenhagen, where he conducted research on stowage planning optimization with Maersk Line. He has worked on R&D projects in this domain for more than 10 years and is experienced in optimization algorithms as well as product development. Alberto has several stowage optimization publications in leading international journals.
